Compared to 2019, homicide was up by 55.56%. Serious assaults have risen to 14%, domestic violence was up by 4.6%, and assaults against police have climbed to 47%. A growing trend in many parts of the world, anti-Asian hate crime has also increased in 2020 by 138% in Vancouver. Because many companies had to close their doors during the pandemic, there was a 47.9% jump in break-ins to commercial and business properties.
Crimes that fell in 2019
But the crime statistics were not all bad. There were some promising figures in 2020. Robberies, for example, have dropped in 2020 by 6% from 2019. Down by 20%, property crime was also on the decline. Vehicle theft has dropped 37%, while shoplifting has also decreased by 26.6%. Reported cases of sexual offences have fallen to 5% compared to 2019.
